La co-fundadora de Global Voices Rebecca MacKinnon afirma que los ciudadanos deben exigir cuentas a las corporaciones para que Internet evolucione de una manera ciudadano-céntrica. En la presentación en TED del 12 de julio hecha en Edinburgo, escocia ella describe cómo el internet se ha convertido en el canal primario de comunicación entre ciudadanos y gobiernos, pero advierte que hay una capa corporativa de “soberanos de Internet” entre los dos.
Así como las corporaciones no han sido refrenadas por contaminar el medio ambiente o emplear a niños en sus instalaciones, ella dice que éstas no pueden ser confiadas para desarrollar o preservar un Internet suficientemente abierto y protector de la libre expresión. Hemos aprendido a pedir cuentas, de alguna manera, a los gobiernos pero cómo cuál es el estado de la defensa de los ciudadanos y de los consumidores en relación con la Internet? MacKinnon explora estas problemáticas más a fondo en su libro Consent of the Networked.
El segudo co-fundador de Global Voices, Ethan Zuckerman, dio una presentación en TED en julio del año pasado llamada “Listening to Global Voices“. Tanto Zuckerman como MacKinnon forman parte de la Junta Directiva que dirige Global Voices.
TED significa Entretenimiento y Diseño Tecnológico, y las conferencias son dedicadas a “ideas que valen la pena compartir”. Videos de las presentaciones en forma corta son compartidas en línea y vistas por millones de personas en el mundo. Voluntarios añaden subtitulos en diferentes idiomas.
